Glendale Gate Pros provides professional access control & keypads in Glendale, AZ for residential and commercial properties across the West Valley. A keypad is a small plastic device on a pedestal that spends its whole life in direct sun. That is the design problem. Almost every keypad failure we see in Glendale is a UV failure or a heat failure rather than an electronics failure.
Membrane keypads are the worst offenders. The printed digits wear away under sun and fingertips, the adhesive beneath the overlay releases in the heat, and the flexible layer that makes a button work goes stiff and stops registering. A pad that was crisp on install day is unreadable and unreliable within a few seasons on a west-facing pedestal.
Backlit displays have their own ceiling. Most character LCDs carry a specified operating temperature and go dark, ghosted or sluggish well before the plastic around them is in any trouble. When the display is the interface, an afternoon in the sun makes the whole unit unusable at exactly the hour it is busiest.
Mounting height and hood geometry are the whole game on a west-facing pedestal. A hood needs enough projection to shade the face through the afternoon rather than at noon only, which means depth on the order of the keypad face itself, not a decorative lip. We angle the face slightly down where the driveway allows, because a face tilted back at the sky collects both direct radiation and a film of settling dust.
What actually survives out here is boring. A metal keypad with physical buttons and no display, in a stainless or powder-coated housing, mounted under a small hood or on the shaded face of the pedestal. It costs less than the touchscreen and it will still be legible in ten years. Metal does get hot to the touch, so the hood earns its place twice.
Wiring is half the job. Keypad, strike, exit loop and operator leads run through conduit that heats through the day, and cheap PVC-jacketed cable inside hot conduit goes brittle and cracks at the bends. We run heat and UV rated cable, seal the conduit ends against dust, and leave a service loop so a future repair is not a full re-pull.
Where a touchscreen genuinely makes sense is inside a lobby or a shaded equipment alcove, and we install them there without argument. The objection is specific to a pedestal in the open, not to the technology. If you already own one and it goes unreadable every afternoon, a hood and a repositioned pedestal often recover it, and that is a far cheaper conversation than replacing the whole unit.
If you are choosing between a five hundred dollar smart panel and a well-mounted metal keypad plus a spare, take the keypad. Long feature lists do not survive this climate and a shaded, simple device does. Put the difference into the operator or a second reader at the exit.
With 15+ years of experience, our insured team brings the right materials and equipment to every job — wrought iron and view fence fabrication, powder-coated aluminum gates, truck-rated cantilever slide gates, LiftMaster, DoorKing and FAAC operators, Class I-IV operator classifications, UL 325 entrapment protection — and backs the work with a written workmanship warranty. We serve Glendale and nearby communities including Peoria, Surprise, Phoenix, Avondale.

Materials, equipment and how we do access control & keypads
The difference between access control & keypads that lasts and access control & keypads that gets redone in three years is almost always preparation and materials, not the finish you see on day one. We work with wrought iron and view fence fabrication, powder-coated aluminum gates, truck-rated cantilever slide gates, LiftMaster, DoorKing and FAAC operators, spec them to the job instead of to the invoice, and write the material grades into the free estimate so you know exactly what you are buying.
Every Glendale job runs the same way: site walk and measurements, written scope and fixed price, protection of the surrounding area, then the work itself with a daily clean-up. 15+ years of gate work in the West Valley means we have already met whatever your property is going to throw at us — awkward access, older construction, an HOA with opinions.
